Alloisseus Crop Eared Wolf tells the story of Hairy Dog Tail

It was during the Sundance, in the old days. There was a man who was a Chief. The Chief had a daughter. All the single men, would ask for her hand in marriage, but the daughter would refuse every one of the single men. There was no one that she would say "yes" too. The single men were very handsome and rich, but she would still refuse them. But there is one that would come during the night and would crawl into bed with her. She was involved with this one.

So one day, her father told her, "Daughter there are handsome and rich bachelors asking for your hand in marriage. What's the matter? Well daughter, all these men are asking you to marry them. They are all handsome and rich, but you keep refusing. Why don't you marry?" So she told her mother, "There is someone who crawls into bed with me, he is the one I will marry." Her mother said, "Do you know him?" The daughter said, "No. Everyday I look for him, but I can't find him." Her father said, "Well daughter, why don'­t you do this?" The daughter said, "At night, when he crawls into bed with me, we cover up with his blanket." Her father said, "On your hands, use a bunch of red ocher. When he crawls into bed with you, hug him close to you. The ocher will rub off on him, from your hand." That night, when she went to bed, she felt him crawl into bed with her. She did what her father told her to do. Towards morning again, he left. Her father said, "We will look for him tomorrow."

The next morning, the Chief went out to look for him. As he was walking around checking out all the single men, a pack of dogs ran past him. When the Chief looked, one of the dogs had a hand print on his fur, the hand print of his daughter. He was very devastated. His daughter was having an affair with a dog. The dog used his hide to cover her every night. This is the one who comes to visit her during the night, it is a dog. His daughter had done a very embarrassing thing. He confronted his daughter about it. He told her, "The one that comes in to visit you at night is a dog." The Chief also went to look for the dog. By then the dog had turned into a man. He told him that it was very embarrassing what he did.

The Chief's daughter and the man eventually got together as man and wife, they moved away, far away from the camp. They lived with all the dogs. Whenever anyone came near them, all the dogs would attack them, rip them apart and kill them. As time went, the dogs had killed a lot of the people. So the people told the Chief, "Your daughter and son-in-law, Hairy Dog Tail, live way over there. Your son-in-law has killed a lot of our people. You should go over there and tell him to quit killing our people." The Chief and his wife left for their daughter and son-in-law's camp right away. When they were near the camp, all the dogs came after them. The dogs were ready to attack them and kill the Chief and his wife. The Chief told the dogs that he was only coming to see his new son in law, Hairy Dog Tail, so the dogs backed off. The Chief told Hairy Dog Tail, that is was very embarrassing what he did. Hairy Dog Tail replied, "The dogs attack the people and eat them." As time went, hairy Dog Tail died, his spirit went up to the sky and became a star, the Evening Star.
